President Mark explains caribou moose Emmert and reindeer hunting conclude interim AD Scott Woodward?who took the position full time later on?did not go for the experienced coach, but rather a young up and comer by the name of Steve Sarkisian.Sarkisian was serving as the offensive coordinator for the USC Trojans, and has coached and impressive list of quarterbacks who went on the play in the NFL. Last time in "Burning Questions", we began our look at the Auburn Tiger defense for the upcoming 2010 football season. The secondary was the topic, and if a few breaks go the Tigers' way (getting some key veterans back from injury), it looks to be much improved and may actually be a strong point for the D.Now we are on to the linebacker position. It is hard to tell where to begin with these guys. Besieged by injuries in the pre-season, the linebacker corps never recovered, but may have been the most over-achieving bunch on the field. When you look at what Defensive Coordinator Ted Roof and the other defensive coaches were working with, it is hard to lay blame on anyone. At the end of the day, it is painfully obvious that the cupboard was bare.A team can never assume that players will not get injured, but when it goes into its final two regular season games dressing out four scholarship linebackers, it has to be easy to feel a little snake bit.It is imperative that the Tigers re-stock, or should I say stock up , on linebackers in this recruiting class, if not the next few as well.LinebackerThe linebacker position was by far the thinnest, least experienced position on Auburn's team in 2009. Seniors Craig Stevens and Josh Bynes were the only linebackers that had seen significant playing time coming in to the 2009 season. The long-awaited arrival of highly decorated LB Eltoro Freeman was met with difficulty, as he struggled to play up to his potential. After Coach Gene Chizik did not let Freeman travel with the team against SEC foe Arkansas, he came back and showed signs of meeting expectations, only to go down to injury and not play in the final two games of the year. That said, the Tigers will return all three starters in 2010. But with the exception of incoming help, next season could look similar numbers-wise for the LB spot. Excluding Spencer Pybus and possibly Adam Herring, the injured linebackers this season had seen little, if any, playing time coming into the year. With Pybus, Herring, and Harris Gaston already out with injuries, sophomore Jonathon Evans (true freshman in 2009) was thrown into the fire and showed great promise against bitter rivals Georgia and Alabama. Still, finishing out the season dressing four scholarship linebackers is far from ideal for any program, much less one trying to compete in the SEC. On a brighter note, Gene Chizik and staff seemed to have addressed this deficiency on the recruiting trail, having a host of highly-touted LBs pledging their verbal commitments:LaDarius Owens - ESPN, Rivals , Scout Four-Star Owens has also played defensive end in high school, but the 6'2", 225 lbs athlete will most definitely play at linebacker for defensive coordinator Ted Roof. With good mobility and power, look for Owens to get immediate playing time in 2010. Jawara White - ESPN Four-Star, Rivals & Scout Three-StarThe 6'2", 217 lbs outside linebacker has tremendous upside. One of the Tiger's earliest commits, White is also a very athletic, rangy player that could prove to be a gem in this class. With the natural tools he already possesses, White may see the field much earlier than many expect. Becoming consistent and knowing his role will be imperative to White's early success. Jake Holland - ESPN, Rivals , Scout Three-StarAt 6'1", 228 lbs Holland may be the hardest working, solid linebacker the Tigers will sign. Known for his consistency, Holland is fundamentally sound and very instinctive once the ball is snapped. Though not the flashiest of AU's commits, he could see playing time in 2010 at linebacker, but he has a better chance on special teams. Jessel Curry - ESPN Two-Star, Rivals & Scout Three-StarAn early signee, Curry was a star fullback in high school, but Auburn fans will not see him in a three-point stance on Saturdays the next few years. Not in Gus Malzhan's offense. The 6'2", 215 lbs pounder runs a 4.5 forty yard dash, and is a great open field tackler with great instincts. Coming in early will do nothing but help Curry, and should definitely see playing time on special teams right away. Shaun Kitchens Kitchens is listed as an "athlete" by many recruiting services, but he projects best at the linebacker spot. At 6'3", 217 lbs, Kitchens athleticism excites college coaches and could potentially play a number of positions, including receiver on offense. Whatever position he ends up at, Kitchens will be a difference maker and should have an immediate impact.Possible commit...Victor Beasley Beasley, at a towering 6'4", is a spectacular athlete. A Clemson commit, Beasley is listed as a "soft verbal" to the Tigers (from South Carolina) and has always listed Auburn as high on his list. Beasley is somewhat raw, but with his frame and athletic ability, could be molded into a great player with the help of a big-time college regimen. With three linebackers already giving their verbal pledge and one already signed, it may be hard to find room for a possible late pledge from Beasley. In retrospect, it is hard to find fault with the play of the linebacking corps, considering the amount of time they had to spend on the field. The 2010 recruiting class should bring well-needed back-up, but it may take another good recruiting class to get the linebacker position where the Tigers want it.Look to see the same names on the field the majority of next year, but the incoming class will add long-awaited depth and provide rest for the starters. After 2009, the returning linebackers may not know what to do with any idle time on their hands, but there is no doubt it will be welcomed.. They can't voice their thoughts and get outcasted. You just lost a fan, Russo I used to say good things about you when people bash you Now, it's over I won't say another good thing about you. In Auburn defensive Coordinator Gus Malzahn's reverse and screen-heavy, up-tempo offense, Trovon Reed's quickness, burst, and elusiveness in the open field will be terrifying. At 6'0" and under 200 pounds, he's suited for the wing/slot formation (which he also played in high school) so crucial to Malzahn's sideline-to-sideline scheming.Along with freshman Michael Dyer and dual-threat QB Cameron Newton, the Tigers could have the most explosive offense in the SEC come fall club chambeaux . It always has been.Believe it or not, other great players have come and gone long before Woods was even a glimmer in Earl Woods' eye.Walter Hagen retired, and the game of golf continued.Bobby Jones walked away from the game at 28-years-old, and golf continued.Byron Nelson bought a ranch and walked away from the game right smack in the middle of his prime, and golf continued.Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus all retired, yet the game of golf continued. We’d be foolish and very short-sighted to think that Woods' absence will now bring down a game that has been played since the Scots were whacking featheries along the seaside links in the early 1600’s.That being said, it doesn’t mean that Woods' absence won’t have a drastic effect in the short-term.You see, when Woods hit the professional scene in late 1996, he opened up the game of golf to a brand new audience.Millions upon millions of people who previously had no interest in the game of golf began tuning in to watch Woods, which is of course a good thing, but is also precisely where the problem lies.Based on the television and attendance ratings in late '08 and early '09, it’s safe to say that at least 50 percent of people who tune in to golf do so only to watch Woods. That more or less means that Woods draws at least 50 percent more viewers and patrons to a golf tournament when he is present. That also means that when he’s out on his “indefinite” leave from the game, we can expect at least 50 percent fewer viewers and patrons at golf tournaments. And there’s not a darn thing that Rory McIlroy, Ryo Ishikawa or Rickie Fowler can do about that—until one of them wins a dozen majors or so.Unless Tom Watson makes another miraculous run at the 2010 British Open at St caribous . This is Holtby’s first professional season and has filled in for Michal Neuvith on Hershey, who was recalled to Washington with Semyon Varlamov’s injury. His response in Hershey exceeded expectations. Holtby has posted a 7-1 record and a whopping 1.22 GAA and an even more impressive Caribou tickets - cariboucoffee .956 save percentage. Holtby is showing his stuff and showing the Caps may have hit the nail on the head int he 2008 4th round. Holtby’s success also give the Capitals tremendous flexibility between the pipes.9. John Carlson (2008, 1st round, 21st). When the Capitals drafted John Carlson 21st overall, many NHL: draft analysts said Carlson was near NHL ready. We believe he is NHL ready. In his first professional season, Carlson has scored 1 goal and 23 assists with an impressive +17. Briefly called to Washington, Carlson did not earn a point in 3 games. Carlson is going to be good. You can see it. This was an excellent pick for the Caps. He will likely join 2007 first rounder Karl Alzner in Washington at some point to be a long term duo.8. Mathieu Perreault (2006, 6th round, 197th) Perreault is small, but quick and steady with the puck. He was recalled to Washington earlier int he season and started out with a bang, recording 2 goals and 3 assist in his first 6 NHL games. He finished an 18 game stint with 2 goals and 5 assists, before being sent back to Hershey. In 18 games with the Bears, Perreault has 4 goals and 12 assists and is a +10. Perreault handles the puck well, works hard to not let his small size be a problem for his game, and is a quick skater. The fact he was a 6th rounder, and has shown signs of potential jumps him onto this list.7. Karl Alzner (2007, 1st round, 5th overall). Alzner is a classic stay at home defensemen. He will not be a big scoring defensemen (IE Mike Green). That’s not what he does. He plays solid, sound defense and is progressing and learning the NHL with each and every game. Last season, Alzner was trapped most of the season in Hershey due to salary cap restraints. In 48 games last year with Hershey, Alzner scored 4 goals, has 16 assists and was a +23. In 30 games with Washington, he scored 1 goal, 4 assists and was a -1. This season looked to be more of the same, but when the Caps eventually were able to remove Michael Nylander from the salary cap, Alzner was recalled, and my bet is, Alzner is a permanent Capital. In 21 games with Hershey, Alzner was a +13. So far in DC, Alzner has 4 assists and is a -1 in 12 games. Alzner is considered to be a centerpiece of the future Caps blue line, along with John Carlson.6. Michal Neuvirth (2006, 2nd round, 34th). Neuvirth was taken immediately after the Caps drafted Semyon Varlamov, giving the Caps a potential potent duo in goal in the future. Caps fans are starting to see a real glimpse of that future. In his first season last year, Neuvirth led the Hershey Bears to the Calder Cup Trophy. Neuvirth posted a 1.92 GAA effort in 22 postseason appearances setting a Hershey franchise record. He posted a 16-6 postseason record with a .932 save percentage. If it wasn?t for his insanely low OBA, his WHIP would be astronomical.Speaking of his OBA, Kershaw also sported BABIP of .276.
Russell agreed that better quarterback play was an issue."No doubt, you know, you need better than average play from your quarterback to be a great team," Russell told ComcasSportsNet , describing his play as "shaky" and saying it was similar to a roller coaster."You know you go up, you go down, you go up, you go down, same thing," he said.Russell was asked if the coach should be back next year and said, "You know, he should, he should...that's not my decision."Nnamdi Asomugha told The Oakland Tribune newspaper that he and other team captains will voice their support for coach Cable if the need arises."Sometimes it doesn't take a coach two years; sometimes it does take him three," Asomugha said labrador caribou . And let’s not forget the Colts needing late game heroics against Minnesota and Houston to propel the Colts to the playoffs.
